Famous Men of Rome {TOS Crew Review}

SQUEEEEL!!! Another Memoria Press Review!!! I simply adore Memoria Press!!! When I was at the Teach Them Diligently Conference in Nashville, their booth was one of my favorite booths to visit! When the review for Famous Men of Rome from Memoria Press became available, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity!!!

Back to this review. What is Famous Men of Rome?

Memoria Press publishes materials for the classical homeschooler or those like me who just like to add in classical materials. For the purpose of this review, I was sent all three books in this set:

Famous Men of Rome by John H. Haaren & A.B Poland
Famous Men of Rome Student Guide
Famous Men of Rome Teacher Guide

When I got the box and opened it, I was so excited just seeing the books! They are so well made. The covers are very bright and classic. The text of each book, especially Famous Men of Rome, is very engaging! The pictures included throughout the books are very well drawn and colored. The pictures helped to draw my kids deeper into the stories.

The student text and the teacher guide and very similar – almost identical – except that the student guide is designed for the student to complete their work. The teacher guide has the answers to the student text to make grading and ensuring comprehension easier. The other difference in the two are the tests that are included in the teacher’s guide that are supposed to be administered every five lessons or so.

The Famous Men of Rome set is actually designed to be a full year of History for students. It is most suitable for grades 4th-8th grade but you know how homeschoolers are! We tend to make our own guidelines where grade levels are concerned.

The curriculum is set up as follows:

There are 25 lessons included
There is a chapter that corresponds to each lesson
There are 5 reviews for each lesson
Tests are also included

I am blown away by how well each lesson is organized. Each lesson includes:

Facts you Know. This includes important dates, concepts, people and definitions.
Vocabulary.
Comprehension Questions. This section helps to ensure good comprehension from the lessons taught and helps students to cement the facts and concepts taught.
Activity Section. There are maps, discussion questions, timeline work, drawings and writing prompts.
Appendix. The appendix section includes worksheets and supplemental information.

So how did we use it?

Well, you know how we home schoolers can be. LOL! While this is designed to be a year-long curriculum, it doesn’t take us a year to complete. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the stories so much that we took a different approach. We completed 2-3 lessons a week. I went over vocabulary and important information to understanding the story before reading the lesson to the kids. Then the next day I would have my oldest do the written work and activities that went along with the lesson. I did not have my 8 and 6-year-old do the written work BUT I did have them listen to the vocabulary, the story, and then orally answer some questions. You won’t believe how much even the little ones learned! My oldest absolutely LOVED this curriculum. He has loved everything we have used from Memoria Press before so I am not shocked at all. He actually asked to do these lessons! He really likes history so this was right down his alley.
